BACKGROUND
When Norwegian boat builder Norpower VS. won a lacerative contract to supply 20 workboats to a multi national facilities management organization, they decided that the best way to inspect the super structure of the turbine below water level was with the aid of video inspection equipment.
After trawling the internet for specialist suppliers of marine grade video equipment Norpower contacted Iris directly and after listening carefully to the clients requirements Iris came up with the following solution.
IRIS EQUIPMENT SOLUTION
These kind of jobs make us at Iris quite excited. While the spec seems daunting on the face of things, and it would be to the average cctv supplier, its really right up our street.
The synergy between our Scubar and SeeseaTV product lines is rarely more appropriate than in this particular case.
Norpower probably wouldn’t of even contacted Iris if they had merely been looking for an on board camera system, but equally, the conventional Scubar wasn’t going to cut the mustard either.
So by combining the knowledge of installing cameras on every conceivable part of a boat with our underwater camera experience meant that we were able to come up with the perfect bespoke solution.
First of all, a Scubar camera module, IM-SCU-CAM was fitted to a stainless pole which was especially fitted to the bow of the workboat with the camera video feed being routed through the pole into a conduit that ran along the gunnel of the boat. The wheelhouse is exposed to elements and the sea is quite often in a state of turmoil around the shores of Norway.
The solution to the viewing problem was to supply a IM-SCU-MWB fully enclosed and waterproof video monitor.
Due to the rotation of crews, it was requested that the monitors were removable. - Not a problem, the MWB monitors are housed in small Peli cases which can be moved boat to boat.
To comply with SOLAS, the operator also needed to monitor the deck hands at work for the wheelhouse, because of the beatings the boat took they opted for IM-DND-60’s. These cameras are not only esthetically pleasing in the pleasure boat, but they also happen to be totally vandal resistant with the highest levels of certification available. There three point fixing also reduces the chances for cameras movement in the roughest seas.
The systems have been in commission since 2006 and since the operator has come to Iris to assist them on other projects such as fitting camera systems to Exxon supply boats in West Africa.
